For the iOS app “Ranzen” (unofficial app for the Schulportal Hessen) and the “Ranzen Pro” add-ons · Last updated: 7 September 2026

The app is German-only and the German version is the authoritative one. This translation is provided for convenience.

In short

The app keeps your data on your device only. There is no server of our own, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The app connects only to the services you use yourself: the Schulportal Hessen, your canteen’s ordering system if you set it up, and — for purchases — Apple’s App Store.

2. What data the app processes

Data Where it lives Purpose
Schulportal credentials (if you use the in-app login) iOS Keychain, this device only, never in iCloud Signing back in automatically
Canteen ordering system credentials (optional) iOS Keychain, this device only Showing the menu and card balance
Timetable, homework, substitutions, events, absences App storage on the device Display, widgets, reminders
Menu, ordered dishes, balance, account statement (optional) App storage on the device The “Essen” tab, widget, reminders
Your settings (school, reminder times, links) App storage on the device Running the app
Calendar entries (optional, only with your permission) Your iOS calendar, in a dedicated calendar “Stundenplan (Schulportal)” The timetable in your calendar
Purchase status (Pro, widget pack, icon packs, tip given) App storage on the device Unlocking features

The app reads only those Schulportal pages you can see in a browser yourself, and sends only what you trigger (e.g. “homework done”).

3. Where data is sent

  • Schulportal Hessen (schulportal.hessen.de): your login and the requests for your pages. The privacy policy of the Hessian Ministry of Education applies.
  • menuebestellung.de (only if you set up the canteen feature): login and requests for your canteen account. The provider’s privacy policy applies.
  • Apple App Store (purchases only): Apple handles purchases. From Apple the app receives only whether a purchase is valid — no payment details, no name.
  • Your school’s websites (only if you tap a link): these open in the in-app browser. The school’s privacy policy applies.
  • Feedback by e-mail (only if you tap “Feedback senden” or “Meine Schule eintragen lassen”): the app opens your mail app with a prepared draft to the developer. It contains the name and number of your school, the app version, the iOS version and the device model — nothing else. You see the draft before sending and can change or delete anything. The app never sends anything itself.

Nothing else. The developer receives no data from you other than what you send by e-mail yourself.

4. Purchases

Tips, the widget pack, the icon packs and “Ranzen Pro” are in-app purchases handled by Apple. The yearly subscription renews automatically until it is cancelled in the iOS settings. Purchases work with Family Sharing. The app stores locally only which features are unlocked.

5. Notifications

All reminders (homework, evening overview, canteen) are local notifications the app schedules on your device. There is no push server.

6. Widgets, Siri and background refresh

Widgets, the Live Activity and the Siri query read a copy of your data that the app keeps in a protected area on the device. Background refresh loads your Schulportal pages just as opening the app would.

7. Children and young people

The app is aimed at pupils and parents. It contains no advertising, no tracking, no sharing with third parties and no chat or social features. Purchases go through Apple’s purchase system, including “Ask to Buy” for child accounts.

8. Your rights

Since the developer processes no personal data of yours, there is nothing to disclose, correct or delete. Everything local is removed by signing out in the app or by deleting the app. Questions: hello@bittel.app.

9. Changes

This policy is updated as the app gains new features. The current version is always at the address the app links to under “Datenschutz”.
